Pack some sunscreen, bug spray, water and a few other supplies, then head out to hike the more than 90 miles of trails. You’ll marvel at the beauty of Lake Superior and take photos of some of the most spectacular scenery you’ll likely ever come across in Michigan. It’s no surprise why Tawas Point State Park has been called the “Cape Cod of the Midwest.” After all, this scenic park and its campground are situated on an ideal site along Tawas Bay. The protected waters in the bay provide warm, shallow water for swimmers and plenty of wind for sailboaters and kiteboarders. A stay here is almost required because you really haven’t vacationed in Michigan until you’ve gone tubing down the Au Sable, Rifle or in this case, the Platte River.

We were glad to get a spot before the park filled up, because it did pretty quickly. This campground is all about nature, there is a large beach area and plenty of space for fishing and a long nature trail through the park. Since it is mainly a seasonal campground experience it is only open May 1- October 31st.

Winter is best suited for RV camping, with snow blanketing much of the state from November through March. Firstly, while we were staying here, they were making plans to upgrade sites and loveroulette customer service add more spots. This is what I heard, so I am not sure if they proceeded with it. But when we stayed here, they were offering paved full hook-up sites lakeside and a few rows back.
It’s also just a stone’s throw from popular attractions including River Raisin National Battlefield Park, Monroe County Michigan Historical Museum, and Sterling State Park. It’s less than an hour’s drive from the major city of Detroit, making it very easy to get to some of the best RV dealerships in Michigan if you’re a local camper.
